A spirited effort from the visiting York College Spartans paid off on Sandee Reich's game-winning goal at Elizabethtown College in field hockey action on Tuesday.

The goal gave unranked York College a 3-2 non-conference victory over E-Town, which is ranked No. 16 in the NCAA Division III standings.

The Spartans (5-3 overall) got an early score from Madi Wilt in the 17th minute on a cross pass from Holly Martin (South Western). The Blue Jays (6-3) tied it on a penalty stroke at 24:34 and went ahead with its second goal immediately following the restart.

York tied the match just before halftime when Katie Petrillo buried a shot off a corner from Ashton Burk (Susquehannock).

Reich got the game-winner off a rebound at the 68:16 mark in the second half.

The Spartans return to action at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. to face Capital Athletic Conference opponent Salisbury, which is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA D-III standings.


FROSTBURG TOPS SPARTANS IN VOLLEYBALL: After winning the first game, 26-24, York dropped three close games to Frostburg State, 20-25, 24-26, 21-25. It marked Frostburg's second win of the year and first in conference play while the Spartans fell to 4-16 overall and 1-2 in the CAC. York was paced by Melissa Patterson (13 kills, four blocks, two aces) and Alison Dorsey (nine kills, four blocks). Senior libero Ashley Rineman (Delone Catholic) had 14 digs. The Spartans will return to action Friday when they host the York College Volleyball Invitational, with York set to face Centenary at 5 p.m. followed by a match against Eastern at 9 p.m. at Wolf Gymnasium inside the Grumbacher Center.


HARTUNG EARNS CROSS COUNTRY HONORS: The Capital Athletic Conference has selected York College junior Tim Hartung as the men's cross country Athlete of the Week after he captured individual honors with a first-place finish at the Frostburg State Invitational with a time of 27:49.70, over 37 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. His efforts helped the Spartans capture the team title in the event.

LONG IS GOLFER OF WEEK: York junior Kevin Long was selected as the Capital Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week. Long carded a pair of 2-under-par scores of 70 at Dauphin Highlands course in the Penn State Harrisburg tournament. He finished just two strokes out of first place but was the top CAC finisher in the event. He helped the Spartans place 10th overall in the team standings.
