The Fall 2012 Students of Today are Referees of Tomorrow (START) program at York College produced 19 new scholastic officials in basketball, swimming, wrestling, boys' lacrosse and girls' lacrosse.

The START partnership includes the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) along with a handful of NCAA Division II and III conferences in the Middle Atlantic region.

Participating conferences include the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC), Centennial Conference (CC), Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC), Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) and Division II Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

START is an initiative to recruit college students and others into the avocation of sports officiating, beginning on the scholastic levels and hopefully advancing to the collegiate level in future years. There is a significant shortage of scholastic officials and referees in most sports throughout region and state.

York College hosted its seventh edition of the START program on three consecutive Sundays in October and November. More than 40 candidates registered for the program, and 25 took the PIAA test in the five sports.

In addition to York College students, Fall 2012 START participants included several from other local colleges (HAAC, Penn State-York and McDaniel) as well as a handful of other York-area residents.

Another START program is tentatively scheduled for York College in February, 2013, for those interested in becoming officials in baseball, softball, football, soccer, field hockey, volleyball and track & field.
