The York College baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Mary Washington in the opening round of the 2013 Capital Athletic Conference baseball tournament on Tuesday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Spartans, the tournament's fifth seed, fell to 16-16, while the second-seeded Eagles improved to 21-16.
The Spartans must now battle back from the losers' bracket in the double-elimination tournament. The Spartans will face sixth-seeded St. Mary's in an elimination game on Friday morning at 9 a.m. in Salisbury, Md., the site of the remaining tournament games. The winner of that game will play on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.
On Tuesday, Drew Frankenfield led the Spartans' eight-hit attack, going 3-for-3. Colbe Herr collected York's lone RBI. Cohen and Jimmy King each doubled for York.
Dan Gurganus suffered his second straight loss. He allowed four runs, two earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 72/3 innings. He fell to 2-5.
OTHER YORK COLLEGE EVENT
SOFTBALL TEAM EARNS SWEEP: The York College softball team earned a non-league doubleheader sweep over visiting Penn State Altoona on Tuesday, winning 6-3 and 4-3.
York improved 8-24, while Penn State Altoona fell to 17-7.
Morgan Levine picked up both wins. In 151/3 innings, she allowed just eight hits and zero earned runs. She struck out seven and walked two.
Jess Canami led York's offense in the first game with two hits, one RBI and one run scored. Hannah Hugel (three hits, one run) and Brooke Labell (three hits, three RBIs) paced York in the second game.
